Recently one of my clients asked me what is Enlightenment? I tried to answer her question with my personal view on Spirituality so I could lead her to my perceived meaning of Enlightenment. And I’m sharing my view with you…
The Spiritual path exists so we can free ourselves from suffering, fear and the belief in separation, to find true peace, love, wisdom, meaning and the best way to live our life in truth of who we really are.
The topic of Enlightenment could be quite diverse and with many opinions. Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Yogism and other many religions define Enlightenment as Nirvana, Liberation, Awakening, Realisation, Self-Realisation, Knowledge etc.
Sometimes we imagine enlightened people to be very different and more special than to everyday people. For example monks, yogis, masters, gurus and other spiritual awaken people are at the peak of their path to Enlightenment. They’ve been on their spiritual path for many years and perhaps they have dedicated their entire life to find Enlightenment. They might have found it or not, and this depends on their own perception of their spiritual evolution…
But I learnt that Enlightenment is not only for them and if we try to compare with these ‘advanced’ spiritual people, we feel frustrated, not good enough and maybe we even want to give up our own spiritual Enlightenment.
Have you heard about this old Eastern saying: Before Enlightenment – Chop Wood, Carry Water, after Enlightenment – Chop Wood, Carry Water?
This saying emphasises that Enlightenment is a continue work in progress, a culmination of small steps, small actions we take every day. Our Soul is moving closer to our personal Enlightenment and begins to live it from moment to moment. It builds more peace in our heart, more acceptance and joy in life.
It makes our light stronger bringing blessings and peace through our being into the world and our relationships each day. Others can look and be inspired by our light so they can find their way more clearly.
Our spiritual legacy is important on this planet. Our thoughts and actions should consider the Enlightenment of everyone and our spiritual Enlightenment will help the planet in so many ways.
We shouldn’t worry if our spiritual path will lose focus on some days to matters in the day to day world. Our spiritual focus will return when the time is right, we just need to trust that we are progressing.
Also Enlightenment doesn’t have to happen in a particular spiritual place. Some people go to sacred places to receive Enlightenment, they have an expectation and are disappointed if they don’t ‘feel’ it.
Enlightenment comes when we are happy with who we are, when we find our true purpose and are in love with our life. It comes from our heart, the temple where our soul is growing and our light becomes brighter.
